Cylindrical Tanks

Cylindrical Tanks

Bolted cylindrical tanks are the most structurally efficient solution for storing large volumes of liquids. The cylindrical geometry allows for the uniform distribution of hydrostatic pressures around the perimeter, reducing point stresses and minimizing the need for greater thicknesses compared to rectangular structures. In engineering terms, this translates into material optimization: the steel operates under more favorable conditions, and the homogeneous load distribution allows the use of rolled and galvanized steels such as S280GD, S320GD, or S390GD, depending on the application. The lower shells, subjected to higher pressure, can be manufactured with materials of higher yield strength or thickness, while the upper shells—under lower stress—can be optimized to reduce weight and cost. The bolted system facilitates modular assembly on-site, allowing panels to be transported in standard containers or trucks and assembled with controlled torque. This method allows for future expansions—both in diameter and height—and the replacement of individual panels, simplifying maintenance and reducing operating costs. Furthermore, the construction time is significantly shorter than that of reinforced concrete solutions or welded-in-place tanks, especially in remote locations.

In terms of seismic behavior and resistance to wind loads, cylindrical tanks exhibit favorable performance, and can incorporate perimeter anchors, reinforcements, and covers according to applicable codes, which is essential for engineering projects that must comply with local regulations ( Eurocodes , Mexican standards, NFPA, etc.).
